There are a lot of issues involved when using images on your website (particularly when they aren’t images that you’ve created). For the time-being, I’m keeping this page as a sort of online notebook with links to relevant pages on copyright law and free (public domain) image directories. I’ll try to flesh it out over time.
Copyright Guides
Image directories
- yotophoto: “Yotophoto is the first internet search engine for finding free-to-use photographs and images.”
- Wikimedia Commons: “a database of 848,184 media files to which anyone can contribute”
- GIMP Saavy: “A Community-Indexed Photo Archive”
- OpenClipArt.org “This project aims to create an archive of user contributed clip art that can be freely used.”
- Creative Commons “Enabling the legal sharing and reuse of cultural, educational, and scientific works.” (Has an okay image search feature)
- Flickr Creative Commons “Many Flickr users have chosen to protect their work with a Creative Commons license, and you can browse or search through photos under each type of license.”
