{"id":1730,"date":"2009-08-04T20:15:51","date_gmt":"2009-08-04T12:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nick.onetwenty.org\/?p=1730"},"modified":"2009-08-04T20:17:46","modified_gmt":"2009-08-04T12:17:46","slug":"iphone-development-alternatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nick.onetwenty.org\/index.php\/2009\/08\/04\/iphone-development-alternatives\/","title":{"rendered":"iPhone development alternatives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wanted to quickly post about two things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zii.com\">Zii<\/a>: the iPhone-esque, jargon-laden, portable media device\/platform<\/li>\n<li>Open Source languages\/IDEs that can target the iPhone<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zii.com\/\">Zii Plaszma<\/a> is the &#8220;Stemcell Computing Platform to Innovate and Profit&#8221;. Aside from stupid naming all around, it looks like a neat device simliar to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipodtouch\/\">iPod Touch<\/a>&#8230; but with hardware GPS, a HD camera, SDHC slot, 10 point multi-touch, and FullHD HDMI output. It runs a proprietary Linux-based OS called Plaszma OS, or alternatively Google&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.android.com\/\">Android<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can pick one up for US$399 with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ziilabs.com\/products\/software\/plaszma\/plaszma_sdk.aspx\">SDK<\/a>, which runs under <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubuntu.com\/\">Ubuntu<\/a> 8.04 and includes: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eclipse.org\/\">Eclipse<\/a> IDE, <a href=\"http:\/\/gcc.gnu.org\/\">gcc<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gnu.org\/software\/gdb\/\">gdb<\/a>, cmake, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.khronos.org\/opengles\/\">OpenGL ES<\/a> API.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a video full of crazy jargon:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"480\" height=\"295\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/CZ6It6z05rg&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1&#038;\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Now onto Open Source languages\/IDEs that can target the iPhone &#8211; for people who are keen on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_and_open_source_software\">FOSS<\/a> or maybe simply aren&#8217;t down with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Objective-C\">Objective-C<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/developer.apple.com\/Tools\/xcode\/\">Xcode<\/a> (as a development environment).<\/p>\n<p>Hugh over at <a href=\"http:\/\/gamehaxe.com\">Game Haxe<\/a> has managed to get a basic <a href=\"http:\/\/haxe.org\/\">haXe<\/a> program <a href=\"http:\/\/gamehaxe.com\/2009\/07\/28\/haxe-iphone-cpp-at-last\/\">running<\/a> on iPhone using the C++ build target, statically-linked SDL, and a bunch of other stuff. This means that developers familiar with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/devnet\/actionscript\/articles\/actionscript3_overview.html\">AS3<\/a> could use a very similar language (and libraries) to target the iPhone. Definitely something to keep an eye on.<\/p>\n<p>In related news (but on a potentially bigger scale), <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miguel_de_Icaza\">Miguel de Icaza<\/a> (of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gnome.org\/\">GNOME<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mono-project.com\/\">Mono<\/a> fame) recently <a href=\"http:\/\/tirania.org\/blog\/archive\/2009\/Aug-03.html\">blogged<\/a> that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mono-project.com\/MonoTouch\">MonoTouch<\/a> team has reached feature complete status and are looking for iPhone developers to try out Mono, and their MonoTouch <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C_Sharp_(programming_language)\">C#<\/a> APIs, for the iPhone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wanted to quickly post about two things: Zii: the iPhone-esque, jargon-laden, portable media device\/platform Open Source languages\/IDEs that can target the iPhone The Zii Plaszma is the &#8220;Stemcell Computing Platform to Innovate and Profit&#8221;.
