{"id":2240,"date":"2009-11-12T20:26:12","date_gmt":"2009-11-12T12:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nick.onetwenty.org\/?p=2240"},"modified":"2009-11-12T20:26:12","modified_gmt":"2009-11-12T12:26:12","slug":"modern-warfare-2-realism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nick.onetwenty.org\/index.php\/2009\/11\/12\/modern-warfare-2-realism\/","title":{"rendered":"Modern Warfare 2 &#8220;realism&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s be a furore of negative comments over <a href=\"http:\/\/sarcasticgamer.com\/wp\/index.php\/2009\/11\/modern-warfare-2s-no-russian-seems-unnecessary.html\">a level<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/modernwarfare2.infinityward.com\">Modern Warfare 2<\/a> in which the player is working as an undercover CIA agent who must participate (or at least be complicit) in the slaughter of civilians as part of a terrorist attack.<\/p>\n<p>Although <a href=\"http:\/\/nick.onetwenty.org\/index.php\/2009\/07\/27\/pretentious-game-journalism\/\">I&#8217;ve disagreed<\/a> with The Reverend&#8217;s earlier rants, I have to agree with him on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.destructoid.com\/rev-rant-modern-warfare-2-154784.phtml\">this one<\/a>. The argument that this grotesque level is there to add realism (rather than sensationalism and hollow controversy) is pretty flaky when you effectively remove choice and culpability from the player.<\/p>\n<p>As is often the case, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonion.com\/content\/video\/ultra_realistic_modern_warfare\">The Onion<\/a> is right on the money with their preview for Modern Warfare 3 (video via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeropause.com\/2009\/11\/modern-warfare-2-sequel-revealed-by-the-onion\/\">Aeropause<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"480\" height=\"430\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.theonion.com\/content\/themes\/common\/assets\/onn_embed\/embedded_player.swf?image=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theonion.com%2Fcontent%2Ffiles%2Fimages%2FMODERN_WARFARE_ARTICLE_11_9.jpg&#038;videoid=99070&#038;title=Ultra-Realistic%20Modern%20Warfare%20Game%20Features%20Awaiting%20Orders%2C%20Repairing%20Trucks\" \/><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><\/object><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonion.com\/content\/video\/ultra_realistic_modern_warfare?utm_source=videoembed\">Ultra-Realistic Modern Warfare Game Features Awaiting Orders, Repairing Trucks<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now that&#8217;s realism taken to another level entirely.
