XboxMove handheld console in full colour

As a follow-up to my previous two posts about the XboxMove, I’ve made a few mockups in full colour and with more details.

Here’s a concept image for promotional material (coincidentally, it’s the perfect aspect ratio for a desktop wallpaper):

More images and a full-size (1600×1200) version of this image after the jump.

Update: More recently, I’ve also made a PSP redesign. Please let me know what you think. ๐Ÿ™‚

I remade the annotated versions in greater detail. Here’s the front when the unit is open:

The default faceplate would probably be more plain, but I made this image using an Xbox360 inspired design.

The video conferencing “screenshot” is a modifed version of the XBOX (1) video chat kit that launched exclusively in Japan.

For everyone that made it this far into the post, the full-size (1600×1200) version of the wallpaper is available here.

  1. Ahh, that’s alot of movement controls for a handheld… would you really need them all?

I was thinking, it would look really cool in blender… as well as ur DS mockups too… perhaps I could give it a go after demo comp is over…

  2. Yeah, I didn’t think Microsoft would want reduce controls that would make porting games or using it as an Xbox360 controller any more difficult.

Plus, there is always “move” mode with just tilt, motion, and the triggers if simpler gameplay takes off.

YES, they WOULD look really cool in Blender ๐Ÿ™‚ I have all the .svg files if you want something to start from.

If we can export to .dxf I would LOVE to get them printed in 3D ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. Cool bananas, .svg’s would be great. Altho I’ve got annual report due this month, I may find some time for good ol’ procrastination ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. good idea, but swivel screen wouldn’t go over for a handheld meant for mainstream probably. for adults, tablet pc’s with swivel is a wonderful idea, but for the younger audience… they are to careless and could break it more easily. other than that though, solid design. i could be wrong, just seemed like a bigger risk than it was worth though. tilt games arent really worth it though, too gimmicky. replace it with more ram. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. Just a thought, but wouldn’t recessed anolog stick kinda not work? Not nocking your idea. A suggestion would be to make it to where to expand and condense the shaft of the anolog stick you press and hold down the stick. Allowing some locking/unlocking device to engage, while avoiding twisting the stick. In theory the single clicking of the stick should maintain the fuction of the controller. I own a PSP and the cheap and uncharacterist feel of the anolog stick is my biggest complain. great work

  6. Re: EgOnMsD22 game

    Thanks for your comment. ๐Ÿ™‚

I sort of based this on the Neo Geo Pocket, which has a recessed (digital) joystick. It basically lives in a small hole big enough to accomodate the full range of motion for the stick.

I guess the sticks could be made smaller or more sensitive if the size of the recess isn’t big enough for a full range of motion.

  7. Really slick, Nick! Gorgeous design and ingenious to make it in the shape of a controller. I actually think the controller is a more valuable trademark than the “inhale” or “double concavity” or whatever.

    Two gripes though:

Too thick. Ergonomics is important but I think it would need to be thinner to sell big.

Sticks would need to be smaller (circumference) to be able to move in a recessed space.

  8. The Xbox button would have to be flat or recessed as well. I don’t know if you planned that, but it hasn’t been mentioned, and it doesn’t look flat or recessed.

Also, what are the dimensions of this thing? Is the lower “controls” section the size of a 360 controller, just thinner? About portability of games, where are the triggers? How would they be implemented to keep a slim form factor? Maybe a mockup of the bottom would be in order.

Also, the placement of the shoulder buttons, although similar to the 360 controller, would have to be carefully watched. With the screen there, the design would have to ensure enough space for all sizes of hands. You wouldn’t want poeple with thicker fingers either not being able to use it, and you wouldn’t want everyone to push the screen forward in a frenzy to push the shoulder buttons.

Anyways, you have a lot of great ideas. And it’s obvious you put a lot of time into the design and mockups. ๐Ÿ™‚
